CREATE A MANGA CHARACTER

STEP 1

Sketch your manga character with pencil. Pay attention to signature manga characteristics, such as big eyes and a pointed chin.

STEP 2

Start by coloring the skin. Mix own skin color shade with AQUA INK REFILLS and fill the ink into a MOLOTOW™ #222EM EMPTY MARKER with brush tip.

Decide where highlights should land and leave these parts blank. Note that color becomes more intense when the same part is painted over several times, so add shadowing after the face is painted.

STEP 3

Before coloring the hair, create a white arc across the forehead with MASKING LIQUID. The ready-to-use MASKING LIQUID can later be peeled off without residue to create a reflection of light.

Choose a hair color (e.g. dark blue in the ready-to-use AQUA INK PUMP SOFTLINER). But first, apply a shade that is 3–4 shades lighter as primer to give your character more personality.

Tip: The BLENDER PRO AQUA MEDIUM will make it easier to blend color.

STEP 4

Now paint the eyes with the same light color that was used as the hair color primer. Use MASKING LIQUID to leave reflection points in the eye blank. For a soft gradation, slightly paint over the edges of the iris area.

STEP 5

Now paint the eyes with the same light color that was used as the hair color primer. Use MASKING LIQUID to leave reflection points in the eye blank. For a soft gradation, slightly paint over the edges of the iris area.

STEP 6

Time for shading. Create depth by highlighting around the hair on the skin with a light pink or tan. Further shading should be applied on neck and décolleté.

STEP 7

Using the dark hair color shade, color just the inner part of each strand to keep the edges of the hair highlighted.

Tip: Vary the width of the strands to give hair a natural look.

STEP 8

Use the same dark hair color shade to finish the eyes. Paint a contrasting color in the top of the inner eye. The soft gradation makes the eyes shine. Use the lighter color to shade in the white area—but only very little.

STEP 9

Shade all primed areas with a darker color. The contrast makes the manga character appear more plastic.
